An Interview with Coach Scott Baker

On college soccer - combining sport and academic goals

In this podcast, Youth Media Forward participant Matthew interviews Coach Scott Baker, the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Rowan University in South New Jersey. Scott was previously a player on the team as a student three decades ago, and returned as a coach.

They talk about college-level soccer, in which students have combined sports and academic goals, and the extent to which college soccer can be a pathway to the professional sport.

On his relationship with Rowan: “It changed my whole life. Amazing memories, great wins, all that stuff, but also taught me a whole bunch of lessons…I still take those lessons with me today, not only as a coach but also as a person.”

On college sports: “You should enjoy it for as long as you possibly can and should love it as much as you can - that’s what it’s about at any level. If you make millions of dollars of it, good for you. But if you don’t, good for you too - just do it as long as you can.”
