In this podcast, Youth Media Forward participant Matthew O interviews Coach Scott Baker, the Head Men’s Soccer Coach at Rowan University in South New Jersey. Scott was previously a player on the team as a student three decades ago, and returned as a coach.
They talk about college-level soccer, in which students have combined sports and academic goals, and the extent to which college soccer can be a pathway to the professional sport.
On his relationship with Rowan: “It changed my whole life. Amazing memories, great wins, all that stuff, but also taught me a whole bunch of lessons…I still take those lessons with me today, not only as a coach but also as a person.”
On college sports: “You should enjoy it for as long as you possibly can and should love it as much as you can - that’s what it’s about at any level. If you make millions of dollars of it, good for you. But if you don’t, good for you too - just do it as long as you can.”
