English summary

In this video, Youth Media Forward reporter Cristopher shares his observations and reflections as he travels with the youth organization Mayama to watch a Mexican women’s league football match between Guadalajara and Toluca.

The video follows the journey, starting with an orientation session, getting on the road and passing the city’s “millennium arches” - which were left unfinished following construction from 2000-2005 - and arriving at the stadium. After a long wait, the stadium opens and spectators take their seats.

Two things stand out particularly to Christopher during the match, which ended in a 1-1 draw. Compared to men’s matches, which often fill the almost-50-thousand-capacity stadium, the match was only lightly attended. And the home crowd repeatedly booed a Toluca player of African descent.

At the end of the journey through traffic back home, Cristopher reflects:

“Promoting gender equality in sports will involve not only greater visibility, but also a shift in spectator culture.

Respect, inclusion and equity should not be optional, either on or off the field. Supporting women’s soccer means recognizing talent, valuing effort and eradicating discriminatory practices.”
